We all appreciate our dishwashers, but are you taking yours for granted? Or maybe it's just not giving you the same results it once did, back in its glory days. But it may not be the fault of the machine. Before you blame the dishwasher, have you ever cleaned it? Believe it or not, your trusty old friend needs to be cleaned itself from time to time.
Over time grease, soap scum and food debris build up in dishwashers. This provides the perfect environment for germs to grow, and it also reduces the efficiency of the appliance. Think about it - you are washing your dirty dishes in a slurry of old food bits and germs over and over...something's gotta stick (pun intended).
Here is an easy and effective method of giving your dishwasher the boost it needs to please you once again. Do this regularly to improve the life and cleaning power of your machine:
Step 1: Clear the drain
Remove the bottom dish rack. Inspect the dishwasher drain, rinse and remove all debris caught there. This will improve drainage, increase cleaning efficiency and prevent damage to the dishwasher.
Step 2: Vinegar wash
Start with an empty dishwasher. Place a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container on the upper rack of the machine, then run through the sanitize cycle. To wash away grease and grime and remove odors.
Step 3: Rinse
Sprinkle one cup of baking soda across the bottom of the dishwasher. Run a short hot-water cycle. The dishwasher will be fresh-smelling and have brightened up.
Once you've tried this method, let us know how it worked for you!
